IHHT therapy in Netherlands
If you are searching for a science-backed way to restore your energy, improve oxygen uptake and support your body at a cellular level, IHHT therapy in the Netherlands might be exactly what you have been looking for. At Imvitra, located in the heart of Maastricht, we offer Intermittent Hypoxia-Hyperoxia Training (IHHT): a gentle, chair-based breathing therapy that trains your mitochondria to work more efficiently. Whether you are dealing with post-COVID fatigue, burnout, or simply a body that refuses to keep pace with your ambitions, IHHT offers a grounded, evidence-informed approach to recovery.

What Is IHHT and Why Is It Different?
IHHT stands for Intermittent Hypoxia-Hyperoxia Training. During each session, you alternately breathe air with slightly reduced oxygen (hypoxia) and oxygen-enriched air (hyperoxia) through a personal breathing mask. This controlled alternation triggers a cellular adaptation process: your mitochondria, the energy factories inside every cell, respond by becoming more efficient at producing energy. The result is improved oxygen absorption, reduced fatigue, and better cellular resilience.
What sets IHHT apart from other recovery methods is its complete passivity. You sit comfortably in a reclining chair, breathe normally, and let the protocol do the work. No physical exertion required. No downtime needed. This makes it accessible for people who are too exhausted to exercise, recovering from illness, or simply looking to optimise their health and performance without additional physical stress.
Who is IHHT suitable for?
IHHT is used by a wide range of people. Many clients come to us with chronic fatigue, post-COVID complaints, burnout, or a reduced exercise tolerance that has not improved despite rest. In addition, athletes and healthy individuals use the therapy to optimise recovery and performance.
Common reasons to start IHHT include persistent low energy, breathlessness during everyday activity, slow recovery after illness, or simply a body that no longer keeps pace with daily demands. Not sure if it applies to you? Take the self-test or read how IHHT specifically reduces fatigue

Considerations for Chronic Conditions
- Consult your doctor if you have a chronic or long-term condition and want to start IHHT.
- IHHT is a supplement to your existing treatment, not a replacement for it.
- We always take your health situation and any potential risks into account.
- During the intake, we discuss your medical background and goals to safely tailor the treatment to you.
- The intensity of IHHT is adjusted to your physical capacity and responses.
Sessions and What to Expect
Each IHHT session lasts 40 to 60 minutes. Throughout the session, a therapist monitors your oxygen saturation and heart rate and adjusts the protocol based on how your body responds. Therefore, every session is personalised, not a fixed formula applied to everyone equally.
For noticeable and lasting results, we recommend a course of 10 to 12 sessions. However, most clients notice a first shift in energy levels or sleep quality within the first three to five sessions. After the full course, the improvements in endurance and daily energy are typically more stable and consistent.
Your personal breathing mask
At your first IHHT therapy appointment, you receive a personal breathing mask and a storage pouch. This mask is the core of the treatment, it controls exactly when you breathe oxygen-reduced and when you breathe oxygen-enriched air. Because the alternation between hypoxia and hyperoxia triggers the cellular adaptation, the mask is therefore an essential part of every session. You bring it to each appointment, and the therapist connects it to the system when you arrive.
Should you lose or damage your mask, a replacement costs €15. Alternatively, you can borrow a cleaned mask from us so that your IHHT treatment continues without interruption. We will show you how to clean it at home, it takes less than a minute.
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about IHHT?
Find answers here to the most frequently asked questions about our therapy and treatments.
Is IHHT covered by Dutch health insurance?
IHHT is not covered by basic Dutch health insurance (basisverzekering). However, some supplementary policies may partially reimburse complementary therapies, so we recommend checking with your own insurer. We always provide a receipt for your records and can prepare a session summary on request.
Can I combine IHHT with other treatments?
In most cases, yes. IHHT is a supportive therapy, not a replacement for medical treatment. During the intake, we discuss your current health situation and any ongoing treatments so that IHHT is safely and appropriately integrated alongside everything else you are doing.
Do you offer sessions in English?
Yes. All intake conversations and sessions can be conducted fully in English. We regularly work with international clients, expats and visitors from Belgium and Germany who prefer English as their working language.
How many sessions do I need?
We recommend a course of 10 to 12 sessions for meaningful and lasting results. Your therapist will discuss the right programme for your specific situation during the intake. There is no obligation to commit to a full course upfront, you can always start with a few sessions to see how your body responds.
